Dr. Susan Jamieson Unifies the Worlds of Western and Holistic Medicine “People are more aware of what I do on a day to day basis,” says Dr. Susan Jamieson in relation to her first book, Light in Life: Medical to Mystical. “I notice new patients coming into the office. They’ve read my book and they see me in a different light.” Jamieson, a Scottish family doctor trained in Western medicine, was one of the pioneers in Hong Kong to bridge conventional medical techniques and alternative therapies to create a complete approach to health. She set up a holistic healthcare practice (which was recently renamed Holistic Central), combining the expertise of more than 14 professionals to address physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The idea for the book has its origins in Abu Simbel in Egypt where Jamieson connected with the light energies ten years ago. But the ancient lightworshippers are only a small fraction of the broad light concept that one can grasp. The book also offers a range of topics and therapies that she studied and researched along the way, such as chakras, meridians, yoga, Qi, DNA, magnetism and much more. “I’ve been working with chakras for over 15 years,” she says. “It’s a lot of work to combine everything and to put it all in one book. That’s why I kept it so simple, so anyone can read it. There’s chakras, meridians, universal energies… I’ve tried to make it simple, and connect everything to the light. But many people want to make it complicated. They see everything in polarities.”
One of the challenges Jamieson faces in the industry is the perception and judgments of others and the beliefs they have around holistic therapies. “We’re all very quick to judge in society,” she says. “Some say they’re a lawyer or a doctor. And you have your little set of ideas of what that actually is. Everyone puts people in boxes; psychic healer, herbalist, surgeon. We all do that. I think it’s human nature. But because I do bridge both worlds, I’m not sure if people think I’m still a Western doctor. They might think that I’m not the right doctor to go to if they have something really physical, some kind of nerve or muscular problem. Holistic means everything. It doesn’t mean herbs. And they come in here, because they think that this other person, this new age person, can help. They have a serious bacterial infection, and I give them antibiotics. And they are a bit surprised by that. I do suffer from people’s perceptions. But that’s life. That’s one of my challenges in transcending people’s perceptions.” With her extensive experience of 25 years in treating illnesses and doing radio shows, Jamieson (also dubbed The Light Doctor) has seen numerous clients and has also become something like a healer to international stars that travel through Hong Kong, including Mick Jagger. Today, she finds time to lead workshops and experiential talks on her book and the power of light energy from a scientific and medical standpoint when she isn’t busy working in her clinic or doing research for her second book on “spin”. She fuses cutting edge science and ancient wisdom to take people on a journey of the light, sharing exercises on how to connect with the light to lead a happier and healthier life. “I use all the tools in my toolbox,” she says. “I have a huge experience of illness, psychological and physical. I also use my nature, which is a very intuitive one. I’m a psychic and mystic. I combine what I’ve learnt in the West and the East. I use all of that in a consultation.” “We live in a world of colour,” she continues. “We eat, see and wear colour. Colour is the facet of the light spectrum in which we live. But we’re not really aware of that, because we’re so used to it. If we’re beings of light, we’re going to be really affected by colour. And I talk about how we can use this information to be happier and healthier, because that’s all that counts. I’m not interested in some esoteric concept. I’m a doctor. I’m interested in wellbeing and having lots of energy. I’m not interested in having to be enlightened and that we all have to ascend, some vague concept that people talk about that doesn’t really mean anything to me. I’m interested in the “being light” concept and the way I describe it. The light of our hearts radiates light in a very scientific way. This is based on science. If they can grasp the real concepts, then we can work on using them. I use movement to do that. I teach ecstatic dance. It’s very natural and you move the body in any way it wants to. But I see it as moving the light into the body. “It makes you more peaceful. I see it in a very spiritual way. This is the light of God. It‘s the light that has been here since the beginning of time. Trying to connect to it is a wonderful thing. We are sparks of the divine. We’re all made of the same thing, light. We’re just different facets of light, just like different facets of a diamond. Yet what connects us is the diamond, the light of the diamond.” Vivienne Tang
