Mischa Bags Give Kimonos a Makeover Using the most stunning obi woven in brocade, Mischa transforms these vintage textiles into fabulous clutches and handbags. The Source Asia finds out more about the lovely accessories from founder Michelle Lai. When did you launch Mischa? I launched Mischa in Sept 2004 after moving back to Hong Kong from London. At that time I noticed a lack of distinctive and fine quality clutch bags available, so I created one for myself, inspired by one of my passions - traditional Japanese textiles. Encouraged by friends and inspired to create beautiful things, I designed and hand-sewed entirely by myself, a small collection of handbags, using my collection of vintage obi that I had amassed over my visits to Japan.
How would you describe your brand in only a few words? How does it set itself apart from other brands? When I first started, it was really about paying homage to Japanese Kimono and Obi found in antique treasure troves, bringing vintage luxury back to life. It sets itself apart from the rest because I am personally involved in every aspect of the bags’ designs. I personally source all the fabrics myself at antique markets and from kimono dealers, and have just started designing my own as well. What is the main Powerful, individual and expressive accessories - vintage luxury. Mischa handbags and accessories transcend time and season by complementing a woman's sense of personal style. You've started with clutches, but you've expanded your range to bangles and handbags. Yes, I started with the simple Envelope Clutch and added other accessories to the range slowly, including obi belts, wallets and obi bangles. For my newest project - the tote bag - I designed my own signature print, which is based on the hexagon, the Japanese stylised version of the tortoise shell, representing longevity.
