The First Organic, Fair Trade, Environmental Friendly Fair and Music Show in Hong Kong

A great way to spend this coming Saturday with friends and family is to support and participate in the first ever OFTEN 2010 event held at The Podium, Cyberport. OFTEN 2010 is billed as the first Hong Kong event to bring together organic, fair trade and environmentally friendly concepts together with local art and music acts to help support the sustainable development of our communities. The brainchild of a local organic food company called Chopsticks Company, the event was brought to life by a group of “organic believers” who succeeded in bringing those who cared enough about such issues together into an event held for the public.

All posters and promotional flyers for OFTEN 2010 has been printed on recycled paper with vegetable oil ink and installations and photographic works with the message of environmental protection and fair trade have been specially commissioned with local artists. In addition, the music groups innisfallen, Modern Children, Qiu Hong and Velvette Vendetta with In Love And Pain! will perform a song they have created together solely for this event. A copy of this song will be sold and proceeds from the CD sales will go to Oxfam Hong Kong. A total of nine local indie bands in a variety of musical genres have been scheduled to perform.

Many activities and workshops have been lined up. A handmade organic tofu demonstration is being held with a specialist tofu maker of 20 years using a stone mortar and traditional techniques. The secret of food labeling is being shared by a professional registered dietician and free health and weight assessments will be on offer covering everything from blood pressure to muscle mass. There are also a total of four workshops that will be covering how to make 100% vegan cashew butter cookies, organic soap, natural plant dye and recycling at home. Remember to check out the booths selling a variety of products and handicrafts.

Available at the door or at designated retail points across Hong Kong, tickets cost HKD40 (includes one cup of fair trade organic soy milk) with 10% of all proceeds donated to Oxfam Hong Kong. The event is free of charge to children under 12 and seniors over 65. Pre-enrolment is necessary for the workshops and they cost HKD50 each.
