Rewilding of Endangered Tigers

One hundred years ago there were eight subspecies of tigers. Three of them are now extinct: the Bali tiger, Javan tiger and Caspian tiger.

The remaining five subspecies include the Siberian, Bengal, Sumatran, Indo-Chinese and South China tiger, all of which are now critically endangered.

The Chinese tiger, whish is said to be the ancestor to all tigers, is the most endangered of the five remaining subspecies. In the early 1950s, there were 4,000 tigers in China. Due to human elimination and habitat destruction, there are less than 100 left today (estimated between 10 and 30 in the wild, and about 60 in Chinese zoos).

'Save China’s Tigers' is an innovative conservation project involving the rewilding of zoo-bred tigers in a wilderness reserve where tigers can hunt prey. Combined with one of the world’s most successful breeding programs, 'Save China’s Tigers' enabled the birth of five rare cubs. The organization is working with Chinese authorities to establish vast, protected and ecologically balanced wilderness reserves for the tigers.
