An Ancient Formula with an Alchemistic Spirit Many creams and tinctures are inspired by recipes and potions people have discovered in their grandmother’s archives, but not this cream. It goes further back than just two simple generations. Crème Ancienne brings an ancient formula into modern relevance, as it takes its inspiration from the world’s first cream, utilizing the most effective modern ingredients to decrease wrinkles while nourishing the skin. “While researching different formulations of the past I stumbled upon a rarely-visited aisle of our laboratory library in France and came across the world’s first emulsion-based cream,” says fresh founder Lev Glazman. “Developed in the 2nd century by Claude Galen, esteemed doctor to Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the cream was developed to swiftly heal gladiator’s wounds, but Galen discovered it also worked to diminish existing scars.”
To keep with Galen’s methods, the two fresh founders have decided to honour the formula’s preservation by monks throughout the Middle Ages, and every jar of Crème Ancienne is now hand-blended and hand-filled in a remote European monastery to ensure its high quality and its heritage. The cream’s rich nutrients comfort the skin, preventing moisture loss while decreasing wrinkles and increasing the skin’s elasticity and firmness. The timeless backbone of Galen’s formulation is made up of 53% meadowfoam seed oil, which is hand-blended with rose floral water and beeswax, as well as regenerative chamomile floral wax. “We went to great lengths to find the European monastery whose monks exclusively produce each jar of Crème Ancienne,” fresh co-founder Alina Roytberg adds. “Monks are an important part of the cream’s heritage, as monasteries have been the keepers and protectors of knowledge throughout history. Without them, Galen’s original recipe would not exist today.”
