Combine Traditional Chinese Medicine with Your Spa Treatment

Nestled on the 41st floor at the top of Langham Place in busy Mongkok is an oriental-themed haven of pampering and wellbeing. Chuan Spa, guided by the fundamental pillars in Traditional Chinese Medicine, provides holistic and rejuvenating spa treatments to heal and restore.

The focus at Chuan Spa is to support Jing (life force), Qi (vital energy) and Shen (mind & spirit) through signature treatments to promote rest, relaxation and well-being. Wu Xing (five elements), Yin & Yang (female/male) and Jing Luo (Meridian System) is also incorporated.

For example, each of the five elements has distinct associations which should be in balance:

Metal – Affects the lungs, large intestine, skin and hair, the nose and sense of smell. Related to sadness and grief. Associated with the colour white, night time, autumn, dryness and pungent flavours.

Wood - Affects the liver, gall bladder, eyes, tendons and ligaments and sense of vision. Related to anger and depression. Associated with the colour green, morning time, spring, wind and sour flavours.

Water – Affects the kidneys, bladder, bones, hair on the head, the ears and sense of hearing. Related to fear and fright. Associated with the colour black, the afternoon, winter, cold conditions and salty flavours.

Fire - Affects the heart, small intestine, tongue, blood vessels and speech. Related to joy, over-excitement and mood swings. Associated with the colour red, mid-day, summer, heat and bitter flavours.

Earth – Affects the spleen, stomach and muscles, the mouth and lips and sense of taste. Related to worrying and thinking too much. Associated with the colour yellow, morning time, late summer, damp and sweet flavours.

According to Spa Manager Sheryl Wan, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, detoxification is vital in order to restore normal immune response. “Today food is full of additives and we’re all surrounded by pollution, radiation and electro-magnetic fields twenty-four hours a day with computers, appliances and cell phones. All these things make us toxic and effectively destroy our immune responses when we need them most.”

A total of over 60 individual treatments, massages and wellness therapies are available at Chuan Spa. Guests arrive through the Moon Gate and fill in a Five Elements questionnaire to determine which element in the body is out of balance. Each session is tailor-made, and depending on mood and sense of smell, guests can test and pick the unique Chuan 5 element massage oil that most appeals to them. Before the actual treatment, a therapist also leads each guest to do a unique breathing ritual.

Chuan Spa also just launched their moxibustion treatment, an ancient technique which involves the burning of a small, spongy Chinese herb, known as moxa, to facilitate healing and stimulate the flow of Qi in the pelvic area. The trained therapist will light one end of a moxa stick and hold it close to an acupressure point for a few minutes to create a penetrating heat sensation. Furthermore, you’ll get a Traditional Chinese Medicine facial that completes the treatment. The whole session lasts 30 minutes and sets you back HK$1,388.

The spa will hold a Tango with TCM evening (Oct 14) where guests can experience different Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques, including moxibustion, cupping, auricular therapy, gua sha and traditional Chinese massage. Also on offer are complimentary TCM cocktails, five element tea, and TCM dim sum and dessert. Everybody who attends will also receive a 50% off voucher to return to Chuan Spa at a later date for a complete TCM treatment. Please RSVP for this event. For further details, please click here.
